“Don’t Tell Me To Fix My Posture”

I don’t care if I’d look better. I don’t care if I’d look taller. I don’t care if I’d look stronger.

And I don’t care if I’d look more elegant, professional, pretty, dominant, or respectable.

Maybe I don’t value those things.

Don’t tell me to “fix” my posture.

Because I do not need to be corrected.

I do not need to be fixed.

I will choose my posture based on my own personal decisions about my health,

and for reasons of safety in the contexts that I deem necessary.

I don’t appreciate: constant correction,

comments on my behavior or my body,

conclusions about what’s “good for me”

I don’t appreciate your need to express opinions about my body type or size.

I don’t appreciate when you feel entitled to comment on my diet choices or habits.

I don’t appreciate people like the fat-phobic, who justify this surveillance with “concern” for people’s health.

I don’t appreciate the concept “beautiful is healthy” when it is based on (re)creating an ideal, superficial archetype of what healthy is.

Yes, I understand the politics of body language. I am not invested in using any gesture as an effort to communicate superiority, class, or (hegemonic) masculinity.

I will not accept this policing and patronizing of my presentation, body, or mannerisms in order to be “worthy” of other people’s respect. Respect me for my ideas, my principles, for existing. Respect me because I am a persyn.

And don’t bother to grab my shoulders or place your hand behind my back

as you so gently make your command.

I will go BALLISTIC on the next persyn who does this.

An awesome drag performance made me feel confident to express this after a long time of shame and compliance. My posture is just one thing people use as justification to tower over me, grab me, give me lessons, or mimic how “bad” I look. I am beautiful the way that I am.
